Background

South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has gazetted into law Chapter 8 of the Mine Health and Safety Act Regulations relating to Level 9 vehicle intervention for collision avoidance in trackless mobile machinery, for both surface and underground mining. The gazette was published December 21, 2022 meaning it is now law and has serious implications for mines from both a safety and productivity perspective.

The successful implementation of Level 9 at a mine needs an integrated approach based on a total collaboration between the 3 external role players:

Who we are

Pieter Wolfaardt and Jimmy Furstenburg established Apex Change Management Consultants in 2022.Both have extensive experience in the Collision Prevention field. Practical experience with CPS projects informed us that the biggest obstacle to the successful implementation of Collision Prevention Systems is the lack of alignment of key players at the outset of the project. The end result is unhappy clients and service providers and inevitably serious cost overruns with a product that may not provide the results that clients feel they have paid for. Experience with clients that we have worked with to date have confirmed the APEX USP which is essentially to front end load the project a concept well understood by some Mining Houses for a successful outcome.

Pieter Wolfaardt holds a GCC for Mines Works and Factories and has had a long career working for DeBeers, Anglo American, Murray and Roberts, DRA, Redpath.

Jimmy Furstenburg has a BA in Industrial Psychology and has spent a career in facilitating business turnarounds either an interim leader or as a change management consultant. He has extensive leadership experience as well as facilitating strategic planning and implementation processes.
